Tiger Treasures (3)

Since so many sites are doing in-depth reviews of Tiger, I will instead only post about the little treasures as I discover them.

Safari recognized I was downloading a Dashboard Widget and placed it in it’s appropriate folder automatically. It also alerted me that the contents of my downloads is an Application.

At last, the new version of tiger arrives at my doorstep a whole day early. I love that online Apple Store.

I had no problems with installation but it took several minutes for my user login to complete. I suspect it was Spotlight because it was the only thing visible and it was giving me that beloved beach-ball.

Will be updating soon…

A Better way to Blog (5)

Ecto Icon

As I grow tired of the inefficiencies of web apps, whether it’s having to hand code html or waiting for my form submit to redraw, I discovered ecto. A wonderful iLife, Addres Book, Amazon, Technorati, del.icio.us friendly web standards compliant desktop blogging App. Woosh, say that three times. ecto also has an internal subscriber’s database where you can add subscribers who want to be notified by email when you post. ecto supports multiple blogging systems like Wordpress, Moeveable Type, Type Pad, Blogger etc. and it’s only $17.95. It has an excellent help guide with plenty of screenshots and a very active forum where the developer quickly answers any questions users might have. The App sounds impressive on paper, so let’s set it up and take it for a test drive.

The Poor Man’s Tivo (49)

TIVO vs. BitTorrent
Why do I want to watch TV in my computer you might ask? You don’t have to. You can burn a DVD of the show or connect a powerbook to a TV. The compression quality of the shows are usually good enough to be watched full screen on the Mac or TV. These video files are made by viewers who record them, edit commercials out and the post them online for people to download. This is a visual guide to downloading them.

WYSIWYG comes to Safari 1.3 (68)

Safari Icon
As a surprise and delight to many web developers, Safari 1.3 (released a few days ago via Software Update) includes WYSIWYG / RichText editing. This feature has been long rumored to be in the upcoming Mac OSX version Tiger. Although there appears to be no documentation, Safari’s developer Dave Hyatt reports that Safari is adapting Microsoft’s contentEditable including execCommand and designMode. So far no web developer has been able to get execCommand to work but contentEditable seems to work just fine. Hopefully there will be some documentation released soon on how to build Javascript interaction so that we can bring some sort of App like interaction.

Safari DEMO:This post is an example of WYSIWYG editing. Got Safari 1.3? Go ahead and DOUBLE CLICK ME (saving not allowed of course). You can try using Command+B or Command+I to make text bold or italic. also, you can drag the image around or even drag and drop an image from the browser or even your Desktop.

What a difference 1.3 meters make (7)

I was reading the article on the current MacWorld about traveling light ( Hit The Road Mac ) and it hit me. Traveling light is not just about weight. There is a whole other dimension of elegance and simplicity that is usually not thought of. So I decided to do do something about it, starting with my long iSight and Original iPod cable.

And so it begins (4)

And so it begins. I’ve been developing websites for years now. I’ve gone from wysiwyg apps to hand coding css. I’ve developed all flash sites. I’ve deployed cms systems. I even wrote one myself. Yet, I still didn’t have my own personal blog. So after seeing my wife and so many friends so immersed in the blogging world i just couldn’t resist anymore. I had to dive in. “I don’t have the time it takes to do it properly”, I said. Well, I guess I’ll make time. Life’s too short to miss out on this much fun.
