WordPress.com

WordPress.com, the blogging service from the folks who make WordPress has finally opened it’s doors to the public. This is great news for the blogosphere, we now have an alternative to Xanga, MySpace and TypePad. What’s really unique about WordPress is that it stills maintains the essence of the open source world.

It’s a humble start for a blogging service if you compare it to the feature set of Six Apart’s Type Pad but it’s a great start and it’s future looks bright. According to their FAQ, there are plans to include the most requested plugins(the holy grail of WordPress), advance stats and even domain redirection so that you can have your own domain name on your blog. The service is free and will remain free forever according to this quote.

We’re being very careful not to introduce features right now that we’re not willing to commit to providing for free forever. We know the software and the service better than anyone else in the world, so we know what’s what.

What is free now will remain free for as long as we’re around.

There are some pretty cool things we want to add but which have a higher cost to provide, and once we figure out the details we may make some paid add-ons available, but they’ll be optional.

- WordPress FAQ

WordPress.com runs a modified version of WordPress 2.0. where custom plugins and custom templates are not available. Remember, this is a blogging service for non-geeks. If you require such things then you need the WordPress available at WordPress.org. There is no mention ( that I could find ) of how much disk space they provide or even how much traffic they allow per account. However because of the cost involved in hosting websites it’s safe to assume this will be some of the features they will charge for in the future.

Overall, WordPress.com is a great start. However, compared to Six Apart’s up and coming Project Comet, it’s a baby step.
