Goodbye to my iPod

Posted on Tuesday, November 29th, 2005 at 6:59 pm under Mac Geekery, Personal.

broken window

This is my car’s window getting replaced as it was broken by the new owner of my stolen iPod. There’s is something sad about loosing one’s iPod. It’s such a personal item. Specially for an audiophile like me. My iPod served me well though. And although I was always tempted to replace it whenever I visited the Apple Store there was a sense of faithfulness to sticking with it. Even though it was looking really big compared to all the new ones, it didn’t play video, and had a busted screen. It was my iPod with my music. So here it is to you my dear iPod, may you serve well your new master. Although I wouldn’t blame you if you decide to stop working.

If you want to help replace my stole iPod, here’s a link to contribute.

I am really sorry to hear about your ipod. Good luck with the donations. Are you not covered by house / car insurance?

The link to donate is thowing back errors.

I feel you, man. Had my iPod stolen last year. They were really going after my Columbia jacket, and got the iPod as a freebie.

thank you all for you kind remarks and your donations as well. nothing was covered by my insurance. my car insurance deductable is $1,000 so the window is not covered with it. my home insurance deductable is $500 which does not cover the ipod. for those of you who are getting an error page when trying to donate, safari is causing paypal to give an error. you can try another browser in the meantime, i emailed the guys at dropcash about the issue but i haven’t heard back. by the way, isn’t drop cash cool? it would make it a great wordpress plugin. perhaps i’ll takle that as my project once i get some outstanding jobs out of the way.

that stinks about your iPod getting swiped. I just had a new Nikon digital camera swiped and ya, with the $500 home ins deductable, it’s not worth it.

    So sad.

I love my 2nd gen 10gb … sure it looks like a brick … and weighs about the same … but it’s just that: SOLID! Plus, the sharp edges - it’s timeless.

As sad as I am for you … I’m not contributing to your fund.

Mine was stolen a while ago. I named my iPod with my phone number in the hopes that if someone found it or sold it to someone that it might find it’s way back to me. No luck yet.

Got the idea from when I used to hack startup screens for friend’s to show their contact info on boot and ask for return if stolen. That actually got a couple of PowerBooks returned by good samaritans…

Using my PSP now but not the same. Would like to get a Nano if they can figure out the scratching issue.

I got my ipod stolen from me also. Right before christmas, and I am home in South Carolina. On leave from Alaska. I am trying to find out if there is a way i can have apple watch for the serial to pop up somewhere else when whoever stole it uses it on their computer. I really want it back. I travel alot being in the military and to have it gone is gonna suck on all my flights. Not being able to listen to my music and i have to listen to everything else around me. grrr So yea if anyone has any ideas on what to do about it please comment!

Dude, that sucks! Mine was actually stolen by some Lufthansa cleaning-lady during a refuelling-stop in Brazil. However, I managed to get the Lufthansa crew to write me “letter of confirmation”, two weeks later and the insurance company sent me a letter saying they were going to cover 80% - enough to buy a new video iPod from apple.com!

That’s how it works here in Norway! ;-)

Hey Martin! Well, I too now know the pain of loosing an iPod. I had mine stole from house during my New Years Eve party. I lost my 20GB 4th gen, and my roomate lost his mini. I’ve filled out a police report, but I don’t know if anything is going to happen from it. I’m so angry, I feel like tracking everyone that I didn’t know down from the party, and going door to door, trying to get it.

This is just so frustrating. I welcomed these people into my home and entertained them with music and booze, and this is the thanks I get? This is my reward?

I’m in the same boat right now, except I had a 5th generation 30 GB only a few months old. Left my purse in the lunchroom and found it a day later: iPod-less. I go to a very small, personal school so It might turn up, and I have the serial number as well. I honestly know how you feel, but I have my old ipod Mini to fall back on. I hope you get enough money to get a new one!

well, i think i take the cake….400$ ipod 60GB video jacked about a week ago. JUST got off the phone with a deputy. i learnt something interesting, though. all pawned items in my state are filed in a list so when i gave the officer my s/n for the ipod, it will get put into a huge database and hopefully retrieved. i pray i get it back soon cause it seems almost impossible, as many of you know, to get through the day without my tunes/ videos. ugh, but im glad im not alone in this freakin pathetic world…

I know how you all feel. I had my iPod stolen from the locker room. Who’s the hell is low enough to steal someone else’s iPod? I’m getting a new one, because I have the money, but it’s not the same… That iPod was a gift from my aunt, and I waited forever for it. My cell phone was stolen too. Thankfully, they left my 100 dollar calculator, but I wish they would have taken that instead of my iPod. The cell phone isn’t a huge loss to me, either, I never really got attatched to it. I miss my iPod so much though. If I find out who did it, I’m suing. I don’t think I will though.

There are no words that describe how much it really sucks. It’s just wrong and i hope Apple finds a way for the owner to personaly track down thier ipod via serial number and online accounts. My wife’s iPod was stolen out of her car this morning. Probably the punk kids down the street. I’m going to keep an eye on them because I’ve never seen them with any music players in their ears before. The moment I see one of them with earphones, IT’S ON!!! The iPod was engraved so I’ll spot it in a heartbeat. I guess I’m the dumb-ass for leaving it in the car. And what makes it worse, I just said the day before yesterday, that I should start taking it in the house with me. I feel so violated right now. I will certainly post again if I find it. Good luck to all of those that must put up with this disgusting trait of man.

I just got my iPod video less than a month ago, and I haven’t really taken it anywhere with me yet, but I don’t think I would even leave it out of my sight, or leave it in my car for that matter. Okay, so I’m joining the club. My Ipod was stolen on Monday. I know who has it, but I can’t prove it. I saw them with it, when they left, it was gone. To make matters worse, I’m 99.99% sure I know who it is, and it’s a family member. I feel like dragging him by his left toe and whipping his arse. Furthermore, he ripped up some plants and threw in the fish tank. I’m on the verge of losing several Cichlids I’ve had for years. Who would have thought I’d not be able to leave my IPOD out around my little cousin. Eh!!! I thought the anger would pass, but I’m still steaming mad. Something has to be done. That’s the LAST summer vacation he’ll spend here.

I lost my 20gig Ipod 2 days ago - it was a Friday afternoon & only hours after I took my eyes off my bag. The bag & everything in it was taken. I feel so lost. I stayed back at school for hours to look for it but nothing. I have had that Ipod for ages - I bought it with my own money I had to save up for a year. I cry but nothing can bring it back to me. I just hope the person who took it will return it to me because its majoringly scratched but I’m in love & I don’t care. I feel so stupid & i can totally relate to everyone on this blog. I am going to try & start a fund too. This blog makes me feel like I’m not the only one but no one has said they have got their Ipods back so I am really scared.

My daughters Ipod was stolen from school. It had to be someone she knows as it was inside her purse, inside her basketball bag in the locker room. They had to know where she was during the day so they knew when she would be back. I really wish Apple could track ipods like they do cars. I am hoping they will turn it in when the battery wears out if they don’t have any cables to recharge it.

Last month i was mugged, very frightening moment for my 30gb ipod video by gang of youths. Contacted apple to ask if they could trace it, they came out with some privacy crap.
Had all my music on it, and i know it feels weird some SOB is listening to your music.
As i had no insurance had to fork out another £250 for a 80gb ipod which i am going to be alot more vigilent with.

Oh yeah, I feel for you. I had a 30gb Creative Zen M Vision stolen off me. I know it’s not an Ipod but it almost identical to a Video Ipod. At first I thought I had lost it, look back in my classes… nothing…. ask the janitors…. nothing…. Went to the main office to see if someone had handed it in….. nothing. Now I know for sure someone has stolen cause it would have turned up by now if someone had dropped it. And like many people heres it just not that it’s a expensive piece of hardware, but all the music you loved belongs to someone else now. All those personal obscure songs that mean something to you is now in the hands of a theif. It is as if someone has taken a part of your personality. After having a little 1gb muvo for so long I grew attached to that and never really got into my new zen but this past week I’ve really got attached to it and now this bullshit happens. I do feel so angry and helpless just now but what can you do?

I lost my ipod today as well and found this site while looking for ways to track it. It really fucking blows. Ive had it for a year and i never thought i would lose it =(. I went to eat lunch then went to the gym for some lifting before class. I didnt bother to use it while working out today because i knew the batteries were low from lunch. After the gym i realized it was missing but now i cant be sure if i left it in the dinning hall or someone stole it from my locker while i was lifting. I contacted both the staff of the dinning hall and the employees of the gym and although everyone is helpful it has not turned up. It seems that im not alone in my anguish. but god damn it this sucks.

Hey- I think Apple outta step up to the plate and police this problem of stolen iPods. Every iPod has an electronic serial number and iTunes undoubtedly has access to it.

Apple could match the ser# to the ISP customer’s IP address and send the cops -or at least send a report to the owner of record and the ISP.

Someone should start a class-action lawsuit to force this action. Or at least a petition.

    Reid,
I really can’t say I agree with you here. To date, I’ve had my 30GB stolen… AND a Nano. The nano, however, I was able to retrieve. I don’t really think Apple is responsible. That’d be like asking the US Treasury to put a lojack on each coin & bill. In my case, I trusted the wrong people. Both times. When people see something they want, and want it bad enough, when the opportunity presents itself, it’s as good as gone. I don’t see Apple taking the time to lojack iPods. I mean, it’d be great if they did, but I don’t see it being high on the list of priorities. Just my two cents…

…my 80GB 5th Gen. got stolen out of my open car window while I went to buy some grocery at a gas station. As I “only” had about 50GB of songs on there (close to tears:-( ), I decided to use the rest as an external backup drive and backed up the data from my laptop! (yea, nowadays i think that wasn’t such a great idea, was it..!) So here is a hint: in case you still HAVE yours - never, NEVER! put any kind of personal data on there!

Oh, and here something really useful for the blog:

THE BEST YOU CAN DO IS:

    1. Find your serial number. I sure had no clue where I would find mine!? and finally figured that you can look it up (as long as it was the last iPod connected to your computer:
    http://www.apple.com/support/manuals/ipod/
(under “Not sure what iPod you have?”)

    2. Call Apple. As I already did that, you can skip that step - because all they’ll tell ya is that they CAN’T track it & they’ll give you their “Apple Corporate Security #”, which is: 408-974-2095 to give to the police (only the police will get information by calling this number)

    2. Call the local Police Department (you have to actually BE in the district where you’re iPod got stolen or you can’t report it by phone) - they’ll send somebody & you can report it as stolen.

    3. Sign up with: http://www.unloseit.com/ipods/index.php
it costs 4 bucks, and if somebody searches for your serial#, they contact you - they even give you the money back if you don’t have your iPod back in 60 days!

    4. ask yourself “WHY ME!????” about a hundred times & wish that the bastard who stole it will burn in hell ……………………………………………

Unfortunately, that’s all you can do.

Mine was more than 400 bucks with shipping, so if anybody wants to make a donation… it’s sure appreciated;-)

Good luck to all of you out there AND: there is still some good people in this world who wouldn’t steal iPods from your car, but don’t ever leave your window open:-)

KK, so I bought a new i pod nano, a pink one, because my rents finally allowed me to get one for a great report card, unfortunate me, I’m not even sure where I lost it. Heres my story: I was listening to it in the bus, then I put it in my loose pocket, I thought it wouldn’t fall cause I woult keep my hand in my pocket, and when I came out of a bus a guy almost runs into me so I try to get away, I got away but my hand left my pocket, then I was going on another bus untill a crazy b*tch almost hit me with a car I was freaked and lucky me, the police caught the girl for running a red light, that was such great luck, she deserved it, anyways I wanted to listen to my music to get my mind off the things, then I reach into my pocket and… find nothing was there. I was like *great!* i spent an hour looking for it, retracing my steps, I shed a few tears, well I couldn’t help it, I lost about 300 dollars that day, and about 200 songs that day, I called my mom and said I was sorry I lost it, she was like, well do better again in school in 7 th grade!

(I know, I was only 11 at that time, I’m 12 now, i know it gives me no reason to swear but it seemed nescsessary to complete my explanation, anyways, I still haven’t got my new i pod cuase im just beginning a new year in grade 7 but, oh well, what more can happen to me, I decide not to answer that qusetion *laughs nervously*

lol anyways loosing my ipod was partly my fault, but I broght no bag and had no other place to put it rather than my pocket. Things just sometimes don’t go your way, for me, it just doesn’t.)

Man… reading these makes my heart break. I lost my iPod in April right after my spring break. I had just dropped English (I was doing very poorly) and was feeling good that I didn’t have to wait 2 hours at school doing nothing. On that day, I wasn’t sure if I should bring my iPod or not. I eventually came to and just brought it so I can listen to something while I’m on the bus (I had a car accident with some jack ass that was coming off the curb and ran into my car and I was blamed the accident. My parents sold my car because they feil was I wasn’t responsible for one). After class had ended, and I got off the bus, I still had to walk about 4-5 blocks until I reach my house. I was 5 houses away from mine when this car pulls up next to me and 2 guys came out about to jump me for my iPod. I was like WTF? I was really scared because these were really really gangsterish people. I slowly reached into my pocket trying to buy time for anyone to come help me but no one came and the gangstish person just took my iPod and drove off. I wanted to just throw down my backpack but I had my keys, wallet and cellphone in it. When I went to the police station, I told them what happened. They didn’t do a thing about it. I remembered some things like some of the license plate (I was too scared to remember much when it happened) but they told me it was useless. Then they made me wait for someone to come to write a report. I waited 2 hours when they told me it would only take 15 minutes; I never made an official report. The place where I get off the bus was in front of the police station. And now, the other day at my college, I could have sworn I saw the same gangsterish people but almost everyone at my college looks like that. When I got my iPod stolen right in front of me, I felt a sudden loss to live life because music is my life.

as much as i empathize for those of you who lost ipods–where do you get off panhandling for people to replace it? I bet you wouldn’t be so quick to ask people to give you their hard earned money if you weren’t hiding behind the screen of your computer. so many great causes I could donate my money too, replacing your ipod is ridiculous. That’s life, Sh*t happens! now work and BUY YOURSELF a new one! pathetic loosers

It’s been two years since this happened. Since then, I’ve bought an iPod video and now own an iPhone which I absolutely love. These things happen. But hopefully not with my new iPhone ;-)
