Playing Settlers of Catan

Settlers of Catan PiecesSaturday night our friends Scott and Amy came for BBQ, Firepit, and a night of gaming. For the board game, we chose the game that first got us into german board games, The Settlers of Catan. Settlers is a famous game amongst gamers. I has won numerous awards including game of the year. It also has gained an expansion set for more players and variations of the game like Seafarers of Catan and a Catan travel edition. Settlers plays in about an hour, it simpler than Puerto Rico, more complex than Carcassonne and very, very addictive.

I’ve played the card version of Settlers a bit and enjoyed it, but always put off buying the boardgame version. I suppose I should - it being a classic and all.

Hi Melvin, thanks for stopping by and admiring my wheels! I ride wherever and whenever I can which is never enough :) One of my favorite rides was a few days in and around Joshua Tree, then there was the Black Hills of SD (Sturgis rally), Montana, Wyoming. Beauiful! and btw, I want to be an apple geek when I grow up :)but obviously, I’m not rushing it!

If anyone hasn’t tried settlers, give it a go. But be prepared to get hooked. The extra addons (Knights, Seafarers) are good fun, but I’m hooked on the original game. Again, be ready to give up many nights to this game. It’s addictive.

I would recommend looking into the Cities and Knights add-on :) makes the game lots different. There are several java versions of the game, http://catan.jsettlers.org/index.html for example. I’ve been itching to re-design the graphics for it though.

OK. If you guys like Catan in all its variations and add-ons, you’ll love Wancatan. I started just playing Settlers and got addicted. Then my brother found Wancatan online and now it’s painful to play the board game version. Whoever made Wancatan did a really good job with it. It’s playable over a LAN or over the internet. Just make sure if you’re hosting behind a router you set up port-forwarding with port 20931. You can make your own maps, customize the game, etc. Dang. I sound like I’m selling this thing. I guess I am. It’s one of the coolest, most addictive games I’ve played. If ynu can’t find it by searching online, email me and I can point you to it.

I just love Catan, since my friend and I bought it we almost play it everynight! And the expansions are great, for up to 3-4 hours of boardgaming fun!
The picture looks different from the version we have, but then I have the European version. Great to see that this game is played on other continents!
People should start playing more of these boardgames instead of those mass online games. It’s more fun and you get a _real_ social ’sensation’ with it :)
