I constructed a hanging pot rack with a stainless steel shower curtain rail. Cheap, even more minimalist, and the only mod required was bending the loops open to form hooks. It's screwed to the walls like a normal shower curtain rail. Our kitchen is really too small for 2 people to work in.

I've become a bit of a fan of pot racks now. The light from the overheads reflect off the stainless steel pots. They gleam and throw water-like reflections around. The hanging pots also provide a variable, partial 'ceiling.' This is the same principle as an outdoor patio/deck needing the suggestion of some kind of ceiling, like a pergola, or table umbrellas. It seems we have some psychological need to structure certain kinds of spaces like this. If there are wall-like structures, we need ceilings.

For example, I noticed in the airport, an 'outdoor' cafe had umbrellas on the tables. No function whatsoever, other than creating a sense of ceiling when the actual ceiling was about 100ft high. Without the umbrellas, it would have seemed really uncomfortable.

Yeah... I bet space is at a premium there.

From Lilia's blog it looks like NYC is a fun place to be. Hope all is well with you in work and life. We're moving Monday to Little Rock, Arkansas. Not as significant a move as LA to NYC but we're excited about the change and excited about the work we'll be doing there.

Take care...
