I live in New York and space here is a commodity. I keep trying to make the most of our kitchen which is very small. I’ve never been a fan of pot racks because they are usually so bulky, until I saw this minimalist beauty. And I had to get one, of course. After some trimming on the sides I was able to install it on my kitchen window. Hopefully it will stay put since our window top border is not very thick.

Two days ago Time Magazine was finally modernized by the a redesign developed by Pentagram’s Luke Hayman with TIME managing editor Richard Stengel and art director Arthur Hochstein. And I’m not when their website got redesigned, but it looks just as nice as it’s print counterpart.

British graffiti artist Bansky has been spotted by Jake Dobkin of LAist.com around Hollywood. It’s only fair we we get the same museum treatment he gave New York and the UK. Check out some of his work, he’s dome some really powerful public art.

I took the time this weekend to redesign my wife’s blog at liliflower.com. In the past my blog and hers have been mostly based on Michael Heilemann’s Kubrik, but this time I have done most of design from scratch. I really like the ability to include php functions on the new themes in WordPress 2.0. I already wrote a function that shows the number of unapproved comments on the front page if i’m logged in. I look forward to write a few more, specially that dreaded sidebar content who’s still hardcoded into the template file.

From my personal arsenal of tools, check out Myang’s Photo Textures. She’s got over 2700 free images of textures, buildings, fabric and objects all organized by category. It’s not stock photography but I think that’s what makes it so unique. The photos seem to be taken with a digital camera and are all high resolution or at least high enough for most small projects. With time I’ve fallen in love with this little site, I keep revisiting it whenever I work on a new project. There’s something great abut it. It feels like I experience a blogger’s journey through photography. One cool thing about Myang’s textures is that you can buy all the textures on a DVD for a mere $50. That is a steal. You can have acces to them when not online or just in case her site ever ceases to exist. So go and check it out and buy a DVD so that she can make some money and keep on doing it.

The web has become a great place to find free and immediate access to fonts of all kinds. Some good, some not so good. But, with a few clicks it’s very easy to find out if your logo type will work in a particular font. Here’s a list of a few free font sites I visit when working on a new project. My favorite one, DaFont. Organized by style, searchable and allows you to do a custom preview of the fonts with your own text (see image) right on the browser.

My favorite DaFont feature, the custom preview.

A few months ago I spoke at a conference about web design. I was invited to talk about the rules of web design, a request I completely ignored when I started my part by saying there are no such things as rules of web design. What I did instead was just to pass on some tips and tools I personally use when designing. You can’t teach web design in one hour, but I covered the basics of color, typography etc. When speaking about color I talked about color harmonies and the way color makes u feel. Here are some tools I recommended to find good color combinations.
