300. Dissapointing, but don’t miss it. (8)

300

With it’s amazing stylized approach to the subject, 300 is definitely worth seeing on the big screen. But don’t expect a Lord of the Rings movie experience. 300 falls short of it’s promise. It feels forced, lacks soul and has a pro-war sentiment that makes you wonder if the film was financed by the Bush administration. But regardless, I recommend seeing it for it’s amazing artistic execution. But do manage your expectations.

Spiderman3

You may think you’re looking at a black and white photo, but according to Sony Pictures, Spider-Man wears a black suit in Spider-Man 3.

Do it yourself Star Wars Costumes (1)

Posted October 27th, 2005 in Movies, Personal

Star Wars Costumes

A few months back I was looking online for costume ideas for this year’s Halloween and I ran into a few websites of people who are building full-on Star Wars costumes and props. These are not the cheap looking costumes usually found at the Party Store. These things will make you look like you’re in Tattonie looking for some Rebel Alliance scum who stole the mighty Death Star plans. Time to clear out that garage to make room for some power tools.

Wallace & Gromit: Curse of the Were-Rabbit (6)

Wallace and Gromit

Wallace & Gromit: Curse of the Were-Rabbit is easily one of my favorite movies of the year. No kidding. I was introduced to Wallace & Gromit by my art school roommate Jonathan Richter, a stop animation genius himself who has made a fantastic marriage of traditional techniques with computer animation. If you are not familiar with Wallace & Gromit I encourage you to visit the Aardman Animation Studios website to check out some of their work. These are also the guys behind Chicken Run and Creature Comforts. There has been three short films with Wallace & Gromit but Curse of the Were-Rabit is the first feature film starting the two.

Netfix vs. Blockbuster (29)

Netflix vs. Blockbuster

Although I usually have a strong brand loyalty (Apple, Sony, TiVo), this week I’m putting to test one of my favorite brands, Netflix. Yes, I’m doing the unthinkable, putting my Netflix account on hold to try Blockbuster Online. Although I still have a bad taste in my mouth from Blockbuster’s late fees over the last two decades, I’m ready to give their online store a try. At first glance Blockbuster Online seems almost identical to Netflix’s core features. Unlimited rentals for a flat fee, have three at a time, star ratings, customer reviews, huge catalog of DVDs etc. Why would I switch you might ask? For one thing it’s $3 cheaper. Not reason enough if their service is not as good as Netflix but a good plus. Second, 2 free rentals a month at my local store for those immediate cravings you might have to see something NOW as opposed to LET’S SEND SOME MOVIES BACK, UPDATE OUR QUEUE AND HOPE WE STILL WANT TO SEE THIS MOVIE WHEN WE GET IT IN THE MAIL A WEEK FROM NOW. So here I am, I’ve put my Netflix account on hold and giving Blockbuster a try. I heard they censor movies in the same way Walmart censors their CDs so I will have to put that to the test by renting Pulp Fiction (the ultimate test).

P.S. I am referring to Blockbuster’s Online store that offer DVDs via mail like Netflix, not their brick and mortar stores that offer the flat fee rentals.

Check out the very funny Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (abridged)

Lord Vader, Riiiiiise! (4)

Posted May 19th, 2005 in Movies

I got to see Star Wars Episode III today. Don’t worry, no spoilers here, I just wanted to post some pictures and say wether I liked it or not. I must say, I liked it, did not love it, but enjoyed it. To give you some perspective, it thought it was better than Episode II but it was no Empire Strikes Back. The good news is that Jar Jar has no speaking parts. Hew, I know some of you can breath now. Other than that, enjoy the pictures. The Arclight will be having full costume storm troopers, jedi nights and lightsaber fights so I know I’ll be back to bring my kids to the line.

Star Wars Tickets (10)

Posted May 15th, 2005 in Movies

Opening day for a movie in Los Angeles is one of the few times I can say “living in L.A. is the coolest thing” without anyone rebutting by bringing up earthquakes, fires, riots, gangs, actors or smog. Case in point, Start Wars Episode III. I just bought 6 tickets. Not sure who I’m going with other than my wife, but I’m sure it won’t be hard to find 4 more victims to join us.
